Why "Dare to Like Yourself"?
The philosophy behind LenKa is that in a world that makes it hard for you to embrace who you truly are, the most subversive thing you can do is take a conscious and determined decision to like yourself, without asking for anyone’s permission to do so!
What do you mean by vegan?
We do not use any ingredients that are directly or indirectly derived from animals. For example, we do not use beeswax or honey; carmine (a red pigment derived from red beetles); emu oil; lanolin (which is a by-product of sheep’s wool); animal fat glycerine (we use glycerine derived from vegetables); shark-derived squalene (we use squalene derived from olive oil); or egg or dairy-derived ingredients. We are strongly against animal testing and, as such, we use ourselves as the guinea pigs on which to test our products.
Are any of your ingredients sourced from companies that test on animals?
LenKa is endorsed by Beauty Without Cruelty™ (BWC). We source our ingredients from independent suppliers, none of which test on animals.
Are LenKa products Beauty Without Cruelty approved?
Yes. Our entire range is endorsed by BWC. We don't test on animals and we don't use ingredients that have been tested on animals.
Is your packaging recyclable/sustainable?
Our jars and bottles are recyclable. We recommend peeling off the labels (which aren't recyclable) prior to recycling.
Do you re-use the jars and bottles?
Due to the fact that our products are oil-based, and for hygiene purposes, we do not re-use the jars and bottles. We recommend recycling them.
Are your products preservative free?
The short answer is no. We use a preservative in those of our products that contain water or aloe. This is to prevent the product from becoming contaminated and potentially causing infection. While we use ingredients that are as natural as reasonably possible, we feel that it is our responsibility to provide you with a product that is safe for your continued use.
What preservative do you use?
The only synthetic ingredient that we use is our preservative, phenoxyethanol. This is a mild preservative that is free from formaldehyde and parabens. Our use of the preservative amounts to 1% or less of the total product composition, which is safe for topical use.
Are your products safe to use on problematic skin types?
We only make use of plant-based butters and oil ingredients that have a low comedogenic rating which means that they won’t clog your pores. Thus, while our products may appear to be “oily”, they shouldn’t cause acne or irritation. We also do not use essential oils that are phototoxic (that make your skin sensitive to direct sunlight) or otherwise toxic to humans.
Are your products safe to use on normal skin types?
Our products can be used on all skin types: normal, combination, dry, oily, and acne-prone skin. Please refer to the product write-ups to determine which product is best suited for your skin type.
Can you guarantee that your products won’t irritate my skin?
While we use ingredients that are as gentle on and safe to the skin as possible, the reality is that we all have different skin types and sensitivities. As such, we cannot guarantee that our products will never cause irritation. If you do experience any adverse reaction when using our products, please give us a shout and we would be happy to engage with you on this.
There are some of you who may be sensitive or allergic to essential oils. Please note that we do use essential oils in our products and that you should consider the list of ingredients (and consult your medical practitioner) prior to using our products.
How are your products made?
Our products are handmade in small batches to ensure optimal quality and freshness. Because we use natural, mostly unrefined ingredients, the colour and texture of our products may vary from time to time. Please don't worry about this; the essential ingredients and beneficial properties of our products remain the same!
Why are there sometimes small "clumps" or fine grains in my LenKa Face Cream?
The shea butter that we use in our Face Creams is unrefined. Shea butter is generally a temperamental ingredient to work with, especially when kept as close to its natural state as possible (we do not heat our plant-based butters and oils). Therefore, it's texture is occasionally influenced by temperature fluctuations.
This does not, however, mean that there is anything wrong with the Face Cream. While the texture and consistency may vary, the essential ingredients and beneficial properties remain the same; simply rub the Face Cream between your palms to heat and melt any clumps that may be present!
What is the shelf-life for your products?
Our products are handmade in batches and we indicate the “best before” date in writing on our labels; please have a look there.
Why are some of your products packaged in amber bottles?
Some of the ingredients that we use in our products are delicate and sensitive to sunlight. We use amber bottles where required to maintain the freshness of our products and to protect and retain the beneficial properties of the ingredients by filtering out harmful UV light. And we think they're beautiful!
How should your products be stored and why?
We recommend that our products be stored in a cool area away from direct sunlight and moisture.
Are your products safe to use during pregnancy and breast-feeding?
Many women are concerned about the use of essential oils during pregnancy and breast-feeding. While the essential oil blends that we use in our products make up 2% or less of the product formula, we would recommend that you consult your doctor or paediatrician before using our products if you are pregnant or breast-feeding.
